Our History
Where it all began…
Freemasonry has a rich and enduring presence in the Sutherland Shire, spanning over a century. The origins date back to 1913 when efforts to establish a lodge in Helensburgh were initiated, though ultimately abandoned, missing the chance to become the district’s founding lodge.
In 1916, amidst the challenges of transportation, particularly with motor cars being a novelty, the Masonic community in Cronulla and surrounding areas persevered. Led by the esteemed Wor. Bro. Henry Tonkin, also known for his role as headmaster at Cronulla Public School, they successfully petitioned for a charter to form what would become Cronulla Lodge. Tonkin, with his extensive Masonic background including leadership roles at Lodge Hillgrove, was instrumental in shaping the early years of the lodge.

The support of Lodge Hurstville was crucial in Cronulla Lodge’s establishment, highlighting the solidarity within Masonic circles. Today, District 36 proudly encompasses four lodges: Kirrawee, Cronulla, Sylvania, and Helensburgh, each contributing to the vibrant Masonic community in the region.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is often described as “a peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols.“
In simple terms, this means it’s a unique way of helping men become better human beings, using storytelling and meaningful symbols to teach important life lessons.
The ceremonies in Freemasonry are written in old English, but don’t let the words of time immemorial throw you off. Think of them as just the tip of the iceberg. What you see or hear during these ceremonies opens the door to deeper teachings that you can apply in all areas of life, whether it’s with your family, at work, or in social settings.
